Thoroddur Bjarnason

Professor of Sociology at the University of Iceland

Over the past decades I have led research projects funded by various institutions and competitive grants, and published numerous books, book chapters, journal articles, and public-facing material on regional policy and regional development. I have also played an active role in public policy development on regional affairs and regional development in various forums.

My research focuses on the drivers of regional development, including the causes and consequences of migration, residential satisfaction, and future intentions. I have also studied the impacts of transport improvements such as tunnels and domestic air service on local communities, and the effects of distance and on-campus education on regional educational attainment. I have furthermore taken part in research on how geographic mobility affects tolerance, including among Catholic Republicans and Protestant Unionists in Northern Ireland. I am currently involved in preparing a study of the impacts of artificial intelligence and related technology on regional development in Europe and Asia.
