Research project: Regional impacts of universities
The project aimed to assess the impacts of Icelandic universities on regional development and to map their regional effects outside the capital area. It considered both universities and university centres outside Reykjavík and the Reykjavík universities that serve students nationwide through on-campus and distance education. The project provided an overview of the development of higher education in Iceland in relation to regional development and the evolution of the Icelandic school system since the late nineteenth century, mapped universities’ catchment areas, and assessed their impacts on regional educational attainment.
The project leader was Thoroddur Bjarnason and the project officer was Kolbrún Ósk Baldursdóttir. Other participants included:
- Brynhildur Þórarinsdóttir, Associate Professor at the University of Akureyri.
- Ingi Rúnar Eðvarðsson, Professor at the University of Iceland.
- Ingólfur Arnarson, Professor at Bifröst University.
- Skúli Skúlason, Professor at the Hólar University.
